Celtic are still dominating the back pages this morning, with various takes on the appointment of new boss Neil Lennon doing the rounds.
Here are some of the headlines:
‘Now for Robbie – Lennon will fight for Keane’ – The Irish Daily Star
‘Celts never wanted Trap – Lennon was first choice’ – The Irish Daily Mirror
The Sun meanwhile have focused on comments from Arsene Wenger who has apparently backed England to win the World Cup. ‘I’d love to see England win It’, is the headline. He goes on to say how England’s ‘unshakeable belief can help them triumph’. It doesn’t mention the fact that this famous spirit-of-the-blitz, bull dog spirit belief has been knocking around since 1966 without delivering much (anything).
The Irish Daily Star reckons that Lennon will be pulling out all the stops to keep Robbie Keane at Celtic. He also confirmed interest in Sol Campbell, Craig Bellamy and Joe Ledley. He’ll be doing well to sign that lot.
The paper also carries a story on page 54 on how Ireland’s boxers are running amok over in Moscow. Two more fighters have won their quarter final bouts which means Ireland is guaranteed five medals in the European Championships. When is the last time we won five medals at something other than the Special Olympics? Cracking stuff.
The Irish Daily Mirror meanwhile leads with the news that Celtic chairman John Reid (didn’t he used to be a politician?) has strenuously denied that Giovanni Trapattoni had been sounded out about the manager’s job at Parkhead before insisting Neil Lennon was the only credible candidate.
The paper also carries some rugby build-up on page 42 – apparently New Zealand skipper Richie McCaw has warned his fellow players to keep a close eye on Jamie Heaslip, who he reckons is a major threat. Ireland haven’t beaten the All Blacks yet. I think McCaw is just being nice.
