World Cup referees have been studying curses so they know when a player has sworn at them during games, it has emerged.

The match officials set to take control of England’s opener against the USA have learned off 20 English curses ahead of the match on Saturday.

Altemir Hausmann, set to act as one of the three match officials, told Brazilian broadcaster Globo Sport: “We have to learn what kind of words the players say. All players swear and we know we will hear a few.”

World Cup referees signaled their intent to take a hard line against bad language during the tournament when South African referee Jeff Selogilwe carded Wayne Rooney for insulting him during England’s final warm-up match against the Platinum Stars on Monday.
