‘I would plea with people, do not retaliate.’
A man has been left seriously injured following a shooting in Longford on Wednesday evening (17 July) which is reported to be linked to an ongoing feud.
In a statement to JOE, a Garda spokesperson said the incident occurred at around 7.50pm and involved the discharge of a firearm at a residential premises in Longford town.
A man in his 70s was taken to Regional Hospital Mullingar following the incident.
His condition has been described as “serious but stable”.
Multiple reports have said that the shooting is understood to be part of an ongoing feud between two families in the area.
Local Fianna Fáil councillor Séamus Butler has cautioned against any retaliation amid fears of escalating violence.
“It’s totally out of order and what I’m afraid of is if this escalates, it could be extremely – people will be killed,” the politician told RTÉ News on Thursday.
“That was attempted murder last night here in Longford in a peaceful estate, a good estate.
“I would plea with people, do not retaliate.”
The Garda spokesperson said no arrests have been made but that investigations are ongoing.
They added: “Gardaí are appealing to anyone with any information on this incident to contact them.
“In particular, anyone who was in the Springlawn area between 7.30 – 8pm and any road users who may have video footage.
