12/06 The Front Pages

JOE

It’s the weekend, so our great leaders have a couple of days away from the Dáil. That doesn’t mean they’re not making the front pages of the big three papers, however.

In fact, this weekend they’re splashed all over the front pages. A new poll undertaken by The Irish Times shows that only 30% of voters want Enda Kenny as Taoiseach and a mere 21% want Brian Cowen to stay in charge of our green and financially-crippled land. In an unprompted response, 40% said they wanted neither.

“Two-fifths of voters reject both Cowen and Kenny as Taoiseach” reads the main headline of The Times.

“Majority want an election by end of year” points out the Irish Examiner.

“Majority want an election this year. But they don’t want Cowen or Kenny as Taoiseach” says the Irish Independent, citing the same poll which as well as heaping bad news on the leaders of the big two parties reports that 57% want to go to the ballot box before year end.

The Indo also draws attention to a surge in support for Labour leader Eamon Gilmore.

Also on the front pages: news of Cecelia Ahern’s secret wedding to long-time fiancé David Keoghan (The Indo), Mary Harney says that heads would roll at the HSE if it were private (The Examiner) and, according to a leading German intellectual, “Germany must save euro zone or scrap it” (The Times).

The Irish Daily Mail, meanwhile, goes with “Tweets in charge of exams! Thousands of supervisors are not vetted by gardaí”, referencing a loophole that means thousands of unvetted adults are in our schools supervising Leaving Cert students.
