World champions Italy have reacted furiously to footage showing French Man City midfielder Patrick Viera handing over the World Cup trophy to South Africa’s World Cup committee during the pre-tournament concert.
The Italians have demanded an explanation from Fifa as to why their trophy was handed over by a Frenchman.
The Italian press reacted to the dispute today with the Gazzetta Dello Sport running reaction to the move on their front page under the headline: ‘Our World Cup held by Vieira – Italian Fury’.
Fifa have reportedly responded by saying through a spokesperson, ‘The Italians were invited but they said they could not make it.’
