Former England international Paul Gascoigne has been taken to hospital after being involved in a car crash last night, police have confirmed.
The ex-Rangers midfielder is said to be in a serious but not life-threatening condition after the crash, which took place in his home city of Newcastle.
The 43-year-old was one of three individuals in a car which crashed on the city’s quayside.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “For reasons yet to be established, the car left the road and collided with a lamppost.â€
According to Press Association reports, all three occupants were taken to hospital. The driver meanwhile, a 36-year-old woman, has been arrested on suspicion of drink- driving and bailed pending further inquiries.
The statement continued, “The condition of the two men in hospital has been described as serious but not life-threatening. The woman has been discharged.”
