The first few days of the World Cup have been so bad that Germany have been everyone’s favourite. Fingers crossed we get better fare on Day 6.
Â
I guess you could say it’s been an understated start to this World Cup. Ah who am I kidding? The first round of games have been poorer than Wesley Snipes after a tax audit but at least the Germans have added a little excitement and entertainment to the mix. How often do you get to say that?
Plus we have had some quality goalkeeping comic relief to help lighten the mood. Robert Green may not be the only keeper to have dumped the ball into the back of his own net but that doesn’t stop me having a cheeky laugh when I think about it. France may not have lost but they didn’t win either and what Irishman isn’t hoping they fall flat on their faces?
So on to today’s games. First up we have my dark horse pick, Chile, taking on Honduras. The casual fan may not be too arsed tuning in to this one but this could turn out to be one of the more entertaining first round games. Granted it wouldn’t take a whole lot but Chile qualified just a point behind Brazil playing an exciting, attacking brand of football.
Keep an eye out for their front-man Humberto Suazo (right), who is well worth a bet for first goalscorer at 4/1. Honduras aren’t without some decent players of their own with the likes of Figueroa and Wilson Palacios in the side, so it should be a good game but my money’s on Chile. 2-1 at 15/2 has a nice ring to it.
Next up we have a lot of people’s favourites, Spain, in what should be a simple enough game against Switzerland. The Swiss will be focusing more on trying to not lose so this game could well be another dud. Fingers crossed Iniesta and co can put on a show for us but something in my waters says a draw at 4/1.
The host nation gets the second round started against Uruguay in the evening game. Neither side did a whole lot of interest in their openers but with the winner being all but through to the knock-out stages, here’s hoping for more entertaining fare. The South Americans start as favourites but with home support and a seeming imperviousness to those damn vuvuzelas, I’m going for South Africa to nick this one at 21/10.
A little underwhelming so far but ding-ding-ding, bring on round 2.
