Valter Birsa played well in his opening game against Algeria but really came into his own in the barnstorming match between Slovenia and the USA.
The first half was marked by sensational attacking play from the Slovenians, most of which came through the talented 23-year-old. His passing ability, awareness, maturity and vision meant he was head and shoulders above any other player of the pitch and will no doubt have been spotted.
The attacking midfielder scored his first goal of the World Cup against the USA – a left-foot screamer from 25 yards, and contributed to the second. However, he was also instrumental in Slovenia’s qualifying campaign, netting against both Poland and Slovakia.
Potential suitors: Liverpool
Birsa scored 27 goals in his final season in his native country with ND Gorica before being signed by French Ligue 1 club Sochaux. He was signed by AJ Auxerre in January 2009 on a loan deal which was made permanent the following May. Judging by his performances in the World Cup to date however, he may be heading off sooner rather than later.
With the threat of Gerrard leaving for pastures new, Liverpool could well be on the market for a midfielder who can chip in with the odd goal – but at a knock-down price. Birsa could be just the ticket. If the big names don’t come knocking however, any of the newly-promoted Premier League clubs could benefit from having the Slovenian on their books.
