Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell leads the US Open by two strokes at the half-way stage at Pebble Beach, California.

McDowell fired a three-under par 68 on Friday to move onto the same overall score, which leaves him two ahead of a group of four on one-under par.

That quartet includes Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els, combined winners of seven Major championships, with Ryo Ishikawa and Dustin Johnson the only other players under par at the half-way stage.

A strong European challenge includes Paul Casey on level par and Ian Poulter on one-over par. Padraig Harrington and Tiger Woods are each on four-over, currently tied for 25th place and still well in the running.

Rory McIlroy followed his opening round 75 with a 77 for a ten-over par total, three strokes outside the cut mark.
