There were victories for Andy Murray, Maria Sharapova, Rafa Nadal and Serena Williams on Day 2 of Wimbledon.
Williams began the defence of her Wimbledon title with a convincing straight sets victory over 17-year-old Portuguese Michelle Larcher de Brito, winning 6-0 6-4 after just over an hour of play. She will now play Anna Chakvetadze, of Russia, in the next round on Thursday.
There were very little problems for Scotland’s Andy Murray. The 4th seed won 7-5 6-1 6-2 over Czech Jan Hájek, ranked number 90 in the world. The shock of the day came when Australian Samantha Jane Strosar (runner-up at the French Open and world number 6) lost in straight sets (6-4 6-4) to Kaia Kanepi from Estonia.
Briton Anne Keothavong lost 3-6 6-2 6-4 to Anastasia Rodionova, despite leading 4-0 in the third and deciding set.
Tenth seed Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga defeated American qualifier Robert Kendrick 7–6, 7–6, 3–6, 6–4, 9th seed David Ferrer defeated wild card Nicolas Kiefer, while Svetlana Kuznetsova had a 6-2, 6-7, 6-4 victory over Uzbeckistani Akgul Amanmuradova.
Maria Sharapova had a 6-1 6-0 win over fellow Russian Anastasia Pivovarova, and Rafa Nadal had a convincing 6-2 6-4 6-4 over Nishikori.
