Uruguay and Ghana have progressed to the World Cup quarter finals after victories over South Korea and the USA respectively on Saturday.
Two goals from striker Luis Suarez helped Uruguay to victory over South Korea in Port Elizabeth.
Suarez gave his side the lead after just eight minutes when he latched on to Diego Forlan’s left wing cross and fired in at the far post.
Uruguay went into defensive mode after the equaliser as South Korea dominated and created a host of chances, with Monaco striker Park Chu-Young looking particularly threatening.
The Koreans were rewarded for their efforts after 68 minutes when Lee Chung-Yong of Bolton Wanderers headed in from a free kick to equalise.
Suarez had the last laugh with ten minutes left on the clock, however, scoring a goal of real quality to ensure his side’s progression to the last eight. The Ajax front man cut in from the right and unleashed a curling left foot effort that clipped the post on its way past Jung Sung-Ryong on its way to the back of the net.
Later on Sunday night, Ghana overcame the USA after extra-time in Rustenburg.
The sole remaining African side hit the front through Kevin-Prince Boateng after five minutes but the Americans hit back after the break and Landon Donovan’s penalty took the game to penalties.
Indeed, Bob Bradley’s side will be cursing their inability to close out the victory, with Jozy Altidore and Benny Feilhaber missing their best chances.
Just two minutes into extra-time Ghana hit the front decisively, with Asamoah Gyan holding off Carlos Bocanegra before firing past Tim Howard.
