Longford dumped Mayo out of the All-Ireland series in the first round of the qualifiers at Pearse Park on Saturday evening.

The midlanders edged their more illustrious opponents by a one-point margin (1-12 to 0-14) on a dramatic evening in Longford, at the end of which John O’Mahony announced his resignation as Mayo manager.

Mayo held a three-point lead at the break (0-7 to 0-4) but spurred by Paul Kelly’s goal and the dismissal of Mayo corner back Keith Higgins, Longford hit back to claim a stunning victory.

Elsewhere on the opening night of the qualifiers, Antrim and Kildare were inseparable after extra-time in Newbridge, hitting 0-15 apiece, 13-man Cavan overcame Wicklow at Breffni Park and Derry made light of the pre-game departure from the panel of Paddy Bradley to defeat Carlow at Dr Cullen Park.

Earlier, Armagh were far too good for Donegal and Offaly had three points to spare over Clare after extra-time.

All-Ireland qualifiers – Round 1 results:

Armagh 2-14 Donegal 0-11
Cavan 0-15 Wicklow 2-8
Derry 1-18 Carlow 2-9
Kildare 0-15 Antrim 0-15 (after extra-time)
Longford 1-12 Mayo 0-14
Offaly 2-18 Clare 1-18 (after extra-time)
