The Front Pages

“No More Cuts” roars the main headline of the Irish Examiner.

Thousands of protestors marched to the Dail yesterday in disbelief at Taoiseach Brian Cowen’s assertion that respite services would not be cut, when some already have.

Budget cuts to voluntary bodies providing services to people with intellectual disabilities have angered support groups all over the country.

Opposition leader Enda Kenny told the Dail yesterday that the Government had “lost its passion” on the matter.

Mr Cowen rebuked. “It will not happen as far as I am concerned, no such decisions have been made,” he said.

Meanwhile the Irish Independent carries a story that will make all men sit up and take note.

“Au pair (22) preyed on foolish men” reads the headline.

A pretty German au pair convinced her Irish boyfriend to lend her €2,000 which she never repaid.

“German women must have ways of extracting money from foolish Irish men that Irish women have not been able to accomplish yet,” Judge Mary Fahey told Galway District court yesterday

Tales from the Tabs

The French lingerie model rumoured to have had an affair with Chelsea star John Terry has lifted the lid on the scandal.

Vanessa Perroncel (34) said she was “setting the record straight”. Her comments are published in today’s Sun.

“He was my friend. I’d known him for eight years. I split up from Wayne and he was there for me.”

About the rumours, she said: “I said it wasn’t true, but no one wanted to know. I was supposed to have had sex with him five times a week. It’s just horrid.”

The Sports Pages

Paul the Octopus got his prediction spot on. Spain went through to the World Cup final last night after they nipped past Germany.

The Daily Star report compares it to a heavyweight fight night in Madison Square Garden or Las Vegas, but, in truth, most of us neutrals were left disappointed.

They both slugged away for 90 minutes with Carles Puyol scoring the all-important goal midway through the second half – a powerful header from a set-piece.

Spain roll on to Sunday’s final to play Holland. We can’t wait.
