Schleck takes Alpine stage win as Evans claims yellow

Luxembourg’s Andy Schleck won Sunday’s eighth stage of the Tour de France and Cadel Evans of Australia took over the race leader’s yellow jersey.

Luxembourg’s Andy Schleck won Sunday’s eighth stage of the Tour de France and Cadel Evans of Australia took over the race leader’s yellow jersey following a dramatic day in the mountains.

Schleck pipped Spain’s Samuel Sanchez in a sprint finish in Morzine at the end of a difficult day in the Alps.

Evans, who finished in a group of big hitters just ten seconds back, claimed the yellow jersey from Sylvain Chavanel, with Luxembourg youngster Schleck now just 20 seconds back in second place.

Two-time winner Alberto Contador is now 1:01 back in third place with Team Sky’s Bradley Wiggins in 14th place, 2:45 behind Evans.

However, one big name definitely out of contention is seven-time champion Lance Armstrong, who lost more than ten minutes on the day after crashing three times.
