With the dust settling on a spiteful World Cup finale and little else of note taking place today, we’re taking a medium- to long-term view for Monday’s double.

In racing, we’ll focus on the 1m2f handicap at Ffos Las at 3.20 where we’ll take a chance on FAME IS THE SPUR.

John Hills’s three-year-old filly was denied a run at a crucial stage at Goodwood last time out before being eased down before the line to finish fifth. Beachfire, just over a length ahead of the selection on that occasion, has landed two handicaps since then so the form of the race has worked out well.

Fame Is The Spur goes up in trip to ten furlongs for the first time which should suit this daughter of Motivator, while a two-pound drop in the weights looks a generous verdict by the handicapper.

For the second part of today’s bet, we’re looking at The Open golf championship at St Andrews later this week. Tiger Woods has won the Open twice at St Andrews, in 2000 and 2005, so he’s the favourite again at 11/2.

However, the Tiger is a different proposition these days so instead we’ll for go for LEE WESTWOOD, who has been in exceptional form this year and will enjoy the links test of St Andrews, to finally break his Major duck.

JOE’s Daily Double: Fame Is The Spur (Ffos Las, 3.20 @ 13/2) & Lee Westwood to win the British Open next weekend (16/1)
