Holland forward Dirk Kuyt has hit out at referee Howard Webb following Sunday night’s World Cup defeat to Spain.

Webb showed 14 yellow cards and one red in a spiteful encounter, with Dutch defender John Heitinga sent off in extra-time.

Kuyt, who was one of just three Holland players to avoid a booking (goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg and midfielder Wesley Sneijder were the others), accused the English whistler of being impartial in favour of the reigning European champions.

He said, “We are angry that we lost because we came so close. I know you cannot blame others, but the referee favoured Spain.

“We had many more yellow cards than we deserved. That ultimately cost us the cup.”
