Tales from the Tabs
“Isn’t 75 a little too old for cliff-jumping?”
That’s one of the main pieces in the Dail Mail today, referring to a thrill-seeking grandfather who climbed 30ft up a 100ft rock, dived off, belly-flopped into the sea, and ended up hospitalised with groin and stomach injuries.
Grandfather Christopher Irven (75), a retired army major, attempted a swallow dive from the rocky arch at Durdle Door in Dorset, England, despite his family’s urges for the pensioner not to.
He said: “I may be 75 but I’m very fit for my age and fairly adventurous.”
“I tend to do things that may be a bit daunting to other people.”
“The dive was a bit of a cock-up and I hit the water at a bad angle, it was too shallow. My face, chest, tummy and legs took a battering.”
Irven however, is insistent his hospital trip has not deterred him from future jumps: “If I do it again I’ll make sure I get it right next time.”
