The Louth County Board has pledged to co-operate fully with GAA and Garda authorities in identifying the supporters who attacked referee Martin Sludden in the wake of Sunday’s Leinster final against Meath.

Sludden was attacked by a number of irate fans as he tried to leave the field after the final whistle at Croke Park, when an illegal last-gasp goal by Meath gave the Royal County the Leinster title.

While their counterparts in Meath have yet to make a decision on whether to offer the Wee County a replay, Louth’s county executive has spoken out against the small minority of supporters caught on camera jostling and shunting Sludden.

A statement from Louth read, “On behalf of Louth GAA we wish to condemn the unsavoury incidents after the match. We will provide full co-operation with the relevant authorities to deal with the offenders.

“We are also seeking a copy of the referee’s report for clarification purposes to enable the Louth executive committee to consider all options available.

“We wish to confirm that no further official statements will be forthcoming on behalf of the Louth County Board on this matter until further notice.”
