Arsenal defenders William Gallas and Mikael Silvestre are expected to quit the club before the start of the new season, manager Arsene Wenger has revealed.
Both former club captain Gallas, who was part of the France squad which failed to impress at the World Cup this summer, and ex-Manchester United centre half Silvestre are out of contact at the Emirates Stadium and have yet to agree new deals.
Gallas is reported to be in talks with Greek side Panathinaikos, where he could rejoin forces with another erstwhile Gunners skipper Gilberto Silva, while Silvestre has options to return to his homeland or move to Spain with Malaga.
A third member of Arsenal’s thirtysomething defensive options, Sol Campbell, could well stay on in north London following his surprise return to the club from Notts County last season.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said, “I believe that Gallas and Silvestre will sign somewhere else. Sol Campbell is still in no man’s land at the moment.”
