The presentations of the Sam Maguire and Liam McCarthy Cups will take place on the pitch this year in Croke Park it has been confirmed.

The All-Ireland hurling and football titles were supposed to be presented on the pitch last season, only for fans of Kerry and Kilkenny to invade the pitch.

Concerns about safety regarding pitch invasions were raised again in this year’s Leinster football final, when Louth fans ran on to the field after the match to attack the referee Martin Sludden.

GAA president Christy Cooney said: “The focus is on the All-Ireland finals now, and we’re going to make the presentation in the middle of the pitch.

“We’re going to have ourselves organised to make sure we have no pitch invasions. I’m very optimistic we will put everything in place to make sure that happens, but we can’t do that without the support of spectators.

“The last thing we want to do is put fencing up around Croke Park.”
