20/07 The End of the Day

Home time. Time to ponder the increasing urbanisation of baboon habitats, watch Piers Morgan faff about in monte carlo, and watch Hilary Swank get punished for P.S I Love You

JOE

Pic of the Day (above)

A male baboon stands behind an electric fence in Capetown, South Africa – spying a chance to break into a bakery across the street. Urbanisation is causing the loss of the baboon habitat in South Africa and leading to increasing confict between the primate and humans, as the loss of the animal’s natural habitat is causing baboons to forage for food in an urban environment, breaking into restaurants and bins whenever necessary. And you thought just South African vuvuzelas were annoying…

Mood Swingometer

Today JOE has been feeling…jealous.

One of the problems with writing travel features for JOE is when you have to source pictures of exotic locations, or use descriptions such as ‘sun-soaked paradise’ – a fact furter compounded when you get soaked coming to work or even sticking your hand out to open a window. Our article on Lonely Planet’s seaside escapes is full of breathtaking, somewhat surprising sights – who knew Lithuania had gorgeous sand dunes? If you’re looking forward to a summer holiday or just feel like punishing your eyes, be sure to have a gawp at our five seaside selections.

Tonight’s Telly

Pick of the night: Piers Morgan on…, UTV, 8.00pm.

In a freak occurence last week, JOE and our TV guide got our facts wrong – we told you Piers would be visiting Monte Carlo, but instead the puffy-faced Britain’s Got Talent judge visited Las Vegas. We guarantee we won’t make that mistake tonight, when Piers (hopefully) visits picturesque Monte Carlo, home of the Monaco Grand Prix and more billionaires per square foot than anywhere on the planet. Expect appearences from Fulham owner Mohamed Al Fayed, Prince Albert of Monaco and former F1 driver and current large-head owner David Coulthard.

Movie pick: Million Dollar Baby, Film Four, 10:45pm

Although its title may cause viewers to think a Macaulay Culkin-less Richie Rich prequel is on the cards, Million Dollar Baby is instead a gritty Oscar-winning drama, focusing on the bond between a downtrodden boxing coach (star and director Clint Eastwood, who won the film Oscars for Best Picture and Director) and a thirtysomething waitress-turned-female-boxer (an Oscar-winning performance from Hilary Swank). Even Morgan Freeman shows up to play a supporting role and bag an Oscar of his own. An entirely unconventional sports drama – it would be a shame to divulge any plot details, such is the emotional journey Eastwood’s epic takes us on. Just see it for yourself – you won’t regret it.

Live Like JOE

Get everyone all riled up

JOE’s comments section has been taking a beating in the last 24hrs, after JOE sports writer Shane Breslin put forward his controversial viewpoint on the Joe Cole Liverpool transfer, suggesting the move is an example of two “once-quite-good English institutions now locked in terminal decline”. Ouch. Anywho, the article has provoked a lively debate in the comments section and has been the topic of much discussion in the JOE office, so why not have a read and see where you stand.
