Didier Drogba will miss the start of the new Barclays Premier League season after undergoing an operation on his groin on Friday.
A statement on the Chelsea website revealed that Drogba had undergone “minimally invasive surgery†to correct the groin injury which had troubled him last season.
The 32-year-old faces a three-week lay-off before returning to full training, effectively ruling him out of the season opener against West Bromwich Albion on 14 August.
Drogba fractured his elbow shortly before the World Cup finals in South Africa but still featured in all three of Ivory Coast’s games against Portugal, Brazil and North Korea.
