Alberto Contador won his third consecutive Tour de France crown, while Maxman Mark Cavendish just missed out on the Green jersey.

Contador finished the Longjumeau to Paris stage in 81st position, seven places ahead of rival Andy Schleck, to win the yellow jersey by ’39 seconds, the smallest ever margin in the Tour’s history.

Mark Cavendish won the final stage after a terrific sprint finish, although he required Alessandro Petacchi to finish seventh or worse to have any chance of winning the green jersey.

Petacchi finished second in the stage. Irishman Nicolas Roche finished in 15th place in the overall standings after finishing the final stage in 28th.

Seven-time champion Lance Armstrong finished in 23rd overall, in his final Tour de France.
