The Betfair Gordon Stakes is one of the feature events on the opening day of the traditional end-of-July meet at Goodwood, and the most inexperienced runner in the field, FILM SCORE, is the one that takes our eye.

Mahmood Al-Zarooni’s colt was a good fourth in a Listed event at Royal Ascot last month. The form of the race has worked out well, with the third Wigmore Hall winning a valuable handicap next time out and Critical Moment and Fair Trade, who finished fifth and eighth at Royal Ascot, filling first and second spots in a conditions race at Newmarket three weeks ago.

There should be more improvement to come from Film Score as that was just his second time on a racecourse, while his trainer has been in excellent form with four winners and six places from his last 14 runners.

Back on this side of the water, we have the second day of the Galway racing festival from Ballybrit.

There are several wide open events, but the one we’re focusing on is the featured Topaz Mile Handicap at 7.00.

Irish-born UK-based trainer Richard Fahey poses a threat at Galway every summer, winning with three of the 13 runners he’s saddled at the venue over the past five years. His only runner this evening is EXTRATERRESTRIAL, who is back on a winning mark of 95 having run fairly consistently in several big handicaps without much reward this year.

It’s a competitive event, so if you can find place only betting – Paddy Power has a market to that effect – that could be the shrewdest way to profit.

JOE’s Daily Double: Film Score (Goodwood, 2.45 @ 6/1) & Extraterrestrial (Galway, 7.00 – place only betting @ 5/2)
