Javier Mascherano is set to leave Liverpool after manager Roy Hodgson confirmed that the Argentinean wants to leave the club.
Hodgson had conducted talks with the want-away midfielder, and revealed details of their conversation to a press conference.
“He wants to leave the club, he’s made that perfectly clear,” Hodgson said, “I think he wanted to leave a year ago, and he wants to leave now.”
“But he’s contracted to Liverpool football club, and whether he leaves now will be our decision.
“He’s a Liverpool player, and I’ll continue to treat him as a Liverpool player and I’ll expect him to act as a Liverpool player until such time as he is sold.
“It disappoints me, but it’s not unusual. Every club in the world has players which would rather not be there, but he has a two year contract and I’ll expect him to honour it.â€
The 26-year-old centre-midfielder, who has been linked to Inter Milan and Juventus, has played 135 times for Liverpool over four seasons.
