Real Madrid are set to announce the signing of German international midfielder Sami Khedira from Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart.
Khedira 23, has been capped 12 times for his country and was hugely impressive during Germany’s march to the World Cup semi-finals, where they were defeated by eventual champions Spain.
Khedira has a contract with the Bundesliga side until the end of the 2011 but Stuttgart have decided to cash in on their prized asset now, as he could leave for nothing next year if he sees out the remainder of his contract.
Khedira’s agent, Jorge Nauer, confirmed on Thursday that the midfielder had agreed personal terms with the Spanish giants and his departure was confirmed in a statement on the German club’s official website on Friday morning.
“A true leader and a player who identifies with the club such as Sami Khedira is one that you naturally don’t want to let go but, on the other hand, we can perfectly understand Sami’s wish to further his career at Real. We wish him lots of success for his new challenge in Madrid,” said director of sport Fredi Bobic.
Neither club has disclosed the transfer fee involved, but it is thought to be in the region of €14 million.
