Wayne Rooney will be among the Manchester United players making the trip to Dublin for Wednesday’s game at the Aviva, Alex Ferguson has confirmed.

The United manager says that Rooney will be one of four players to have appeared in the recent World Cup Finals in South Africa who will face an Airtricity XI at the Aviva Stadium.

The game will be the first football game to be played at the all-new south Dublin venue.

John O’Shea is expected to lead out a United team that, as well as Rooney, will also feature World Cup stars Ji-sung Park, Nemanja Vidic and Michael Carrick. Ireland man Darron Gibson will also play.

Says Fergie: “This game is a great way to recognise the relationship we have with Ireland, which goes back to the days of Johnny Carey. And the stadium is spectacular.”

Ferguson confirmed that Antonio Valencia, who has been recovering from an ankle injury, will probably feature: “Valencia’s training well and needs a game. Chicharito Javier will also be part of the squad.”
