Javi Hernandez was among the scorers as Manchester United defeated Chelsea 3-1 at Wembley to win their 18th Charity Shield.
Antonio Valencia tapped the first in for United in the 41st minute, when a wonderful long ball by Paul Scholes was played into the Ecuadorian by Wayne Rooney.
If the first goal was brilliant, the second was comical. Valencia played the ball into substitute Javi Hernandez. The Mexican’s mishit shot ricocheted off his face and into the goal in the 76th minute.
Chelsea improved after that and Edwin van der Sar had to pull off several saves. Solomon Kalou eventually scored a rebound for the Blues in the 83rd minutes, a Daniel Sturridge shot was parried out to him by van der Sar.
Dimitar Berbatov eventually put the tie beyond doubt with a goal in injury time.
