12/08 The End of the Day

Home time. Time to get ready for the Girls Youth Olympic Football, figure out exactly who new Red Devil Bebe is, and revisit Keanu's finest hour.

Iran players celebrate their team’s second goal during the match between Turkey and Iran in the Girls Youth Olympic Football Tournament at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore. The team’s Islamic attire consists of a cap, thick long-sleeved tops, below knee trousers and long stockings. Originally the cap was a traditional hijab headscarf but FIFA demanded the players wear caps instead. Turkey won the high-scoring contest 4-2.

Mood Swingometer

Today JOE has been feeling…puzzled.

Late last night it was announced that Manchester United had made another summer signing, that of 20-year-old Portuguese unknown Bebe. Despite a plethora of young forwards at the club’s disposal, Utd boss Ferguson decided to splash out a reported £7.4m on the former Vitoria Guimaraes man. Interestingly enough – Guimaraes only picked up the striker five weeks ago on a free transfer, and have essentially made a £7.4m profit with stunning haste. So just who is Bebe? JOE’s Conor Heneghan does his best to describe the exciting, but puzzling transfer by exploring the man himself.

Tonight’s Telly

Pick of the night: Banged Up Abroad, TV3 9:00pm

Tonight’s documentary focuses on Chris Parnell, who spent a whopping 11 years in an Indonesian prison after being wrongly convicted of smuggling hashish in 1985. Bit harsh there, Indonesia.

Movie pick: The Matrix, ITV2 10:00pm

Try to block out the memories of the woeful sequels tonight as the original 1999 release, The Matrix hits our screens. Released in the same summer as George Lucas’ ropey Phantom Menace Star Wars prequel, the Wachowski brother’s action classic blew audiences away with innovative camera-trickery (‘bullet-time’ sequences), a mind-bending plot, and crucially, an impressive performance from even Keanu Reeves. Sure, much of the brother’s good work was undone with the disappointing further instalments, but let’s not worry about that – The Matrix still stands up today as perhaps one of the stand-out contenders for greatest action movie of the 90s and is well worth a re-watch.

Recycle your phone

Unlike those irritating ‘Cash 4 Gold’ adverts, recycling your phone for cash actually pays well and is good for the environment. JOE’s Leo Stiles decided to give it a go and see how much he could get for a two-year old iPhone 8G 3G – the result was pretty surprising, and well worthwhile. Have a read here.
