Werder Bremen have rejected a bid from Real Madrid for German international midfielder Mesut Ozil.

The 21-year old has been linked with a number of top European clubs, including Manchester United and Barcelona since refusing to sign a new contract with the Bundesliga side.

Director of Sport at the club, Klaus Allofs, revealed earlier in the week that despite speculation surrounding his future, Werder Bremen had not received any transfer bid for the talented midfielder. At the half-time interval during Real Madrid’s friendly with Bayern Munich on Friday night however, Allofs told German television station ZDF that the Spanish giants had made an official offer.

“We have received an unacceptable offer that does not even provide any basis for negotiations,” he said.

Werder Bremen are in action in a Champions League qualifier with Sampdoria on Wednesday and if Ozil was to play in that game, he would be ineligible to play in the competition for another club this season.

Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho admitted after the game that he was interested in Ozil and could persuade the club to return with a better offer next week.

“He is a very good player and I would be delighted were he to come to us,” said Mourinho after Real defeated Bayern on penalties. “Bremen have said no so we will have to see how things develop.

“If he comes, it would certainly be excellent. Ozil would definitely help us.”
