Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City played out a goalless draw in the opening encounter of the 2010/11 Premier League season.

Joe Hart, who was named in goals ahead of Irish international goalkeeper Shay Given, delivered a man of the match performance, keeping City in the game in the opening half with a series of top class saves from Jermain Defoe, Tom Huddlestone and Benoit Assou-Ekotto.

Gareth Bale went closest to getting on the scoresheet for Harry Redknapp’s side, but his low effort rebounded off the post towards the end of the first half.

City, who included new signings Aleksandar Kolarov, Yaya Toure and David Silva in their starting line-up, struggled in the opening half, but looked a far better outfit after the break.

Substitute Roman Pavlyuchenko had a couple of opportunities for Tottenham at the death but neither side could break the deadlock, meaning that City put an end to a run of six straight league defeats at White Hart Lane.
