Celtic have signed 33-year old Swedish international defender Daniel Majstorovic from AEK Athens on a free transfer.

AEK were having financial difficulties, and the club and Majstorovic agreed to a mutual termination of his contract.

The 33-year-old has 35 caps for Sweden and has signed a two-year deal with the hoops.

Speaking to the Daily Record, Majstorovic said, “Celtic wanted someone to take control at the back and they see me as a player who can do that.

“The dialogue I’ve had with the club tells me they’ve been searching for a player to control things in the defence so it feels great they see me as that man.

“The economic situation was tough at AEK Athens. There wasn’t really any talk that something was about to happen but, when this came up, it was a solution which suited both parties.”

Celtic’s manager Neil Lennon is impressed with his new signing.

“He is a presence, comfortable on the ball, and will head it in both boxes,” Lennon told The Evening Times.

“I don’t think we have had one of Daniel’s type for a while. He is also very experienced. We missed out on Sol Campbell, and I want an experienced head in there.

“I think Daniel will be fine for the job. He has had a decent career up until now, and I hope he continues that here.”

Majstorovic is Celtic’s eight signing of the summer.
