Waterford veteran Dan Shanahan has retired from inter-county hurling following a glittering 15-year career with the county.

Shanahan has opted to close the curtains with the Déise after a successful 2010 campaign which saw Waterford claim the Munster title. Defeat to Tipperary in the All-Ireland SHC semi-final last Sunday means that Shanahan will now never get his hands on an All-Ireland title.

Shanahan was introduced from the bench in Croke Park last Sunday by manager Davy Fitzgerald but by that stage Tipperary were out of sight.

The 33-year-old had been used as an impact substitute throughout this season and was pivotal in the Munster final success.

“Personally, I think my time is up,” he told Newstalk’s Off the Ball. “It’s been a rollercoaster… I’ve won lots, obviously not the big one, and can hold my head up high.”

Shanahan is retiring with four Munster title medals, a National League title and three All-Star Awards.
