Family of Irish man who received traumatic brain injuries set up GoFundMe to “Bring Mike Home”

Rory Cashin

The Kerry native was involved in a terrible road collision in France.

At the tail end of a trip of a lifetime Mike Curran, from Waterville, County Kerry, and girlfriend Sara O’Shea were just weeks away from returning home when tragedy struck.

After cycling thousands of miles from their start in China, crossing multiple countries before reaching France, Mike and Sara were on the road between Reims and Paris when Mike was struck by a car.

He was thrown metres high landing on his head. As a result of the accident, he has suffered 5 hemorrhages to the brain, bleeding in the lungs, two fractured ribs, a broken nose, and broken cheekbone.

He has since been in a hospital in France, having only recently awoken from a coma.

There is a long road of recovery ahead of him and his family have researched the best options, identifying a rehab facility in the UK willing to take him.

They require proof of ability to pay in advance but costs are €50,000 per month and treatment is likely to take at least six months.

Mike’s family keep regular updates on his progress on his GoFundMe page, and for anyone who can help with their goal, head to the website here.
