Relative to the world, we’re not a country of short arses.
If you happen to be a tall person then you’ll know that there are always some problems that accompany your Lurch-like status. People hate you at festivals, there’s no leg room in cars and your poor legs are always cold because they stick out in bed.
Despite these problems, the Irish nation owes all of its tall men a big debt of gratitude because we’ve managed to make the top 20 in terms of the world’s tallest countries.

The tallest men in the world come from the Netherlands, no surprise when you see Edwin van der Sar, while the tallest women are from Latvia. We might not be in the top 10 but Irish people tower over the majority of the competition. Our men are in in 20th place while Irish ladies rank in 24th out of the 200 countries surveyed.
18.6 million people were surveyed and if you happen to be dating a Dutch man or Latvian woman, we imagine your neck must have a few creeks in it. The average Dutchman stands at 182.5cm, while Latvian women have an average height of 170cm.
The average height of an Irish man is 178.9cm, while Irish women stand at 165.1cm.
Relative to the majority of the world, it’s clear that we’re a nation of giants.
