Here’s where Ireland stands on a list of the best countries for making friends

Carl Kinsella

Let’s not make any bones about it – we love to bang on about how friendly we are here in Ireland.

We have so internalised the notion of ourselves as the soundest lads going that it’s unlikely very much could be done to shake that perception.

However, according to the Expat Insider Index 2016 put together by InterNations, Ireland only barely makes it into the top 20. If it were the Premier League, we’d be relegated.

The report says Ireland is the twentieth most friendly country on the world, finishing just behind the likes of Malta, Indonesia and the Ukraine. Ireland doesn’t make the top 20 lists for “Finding friends” (28) or “Feeling welcome” (46). Ireland also ranks 46 on the list for best countries in which to work abroad.

The complete top 20 of the world’s friendliest countries is:

  1. Taiwan

  2. Uganda

  3. Costa Rica

  4. Mexico

  5. Colombia

  6. Oman

  7. Philippines

  8. New Zealand

  9. Vietnam

  10. Portugal

  11. Brazil

  12. Spain

  13. Ecuador

  14. Canada

  15. Romania

  16. Bahrain

  17. Malta

  18. Indonesia

  19. Ukraine

  20. Ireland
