Thousands of Irish motorists have signed a petition calling for a change in Ireland’s motor tax laws

Do you own a car registered before 2008? If so, this might be of interest.

If you own a car, you’re probably well aware of the fact that different motor tax rates apply to vehicles registered before and after 2008 in Ireland.

You can read the exact details regarding the application of tax rates here, but in a nutshell, vehicles registered before 2008 are taxed on the basis of engine size, while cars registered after 2008 are taxed on the vehicle’s emission rating.

As a result of this environmental measure, owners of vehicles registered before 2008 often have to pay significantly higher tax rates and over 14,000 of them have signed an online petition calling on this “unfair, two-tier tax law” to be changed.

The petition points out the fact that a significant amount of money generated from motor tax is used to fund Irish Water and that a motion to introduce a similar tax in the UK was rejected in 2004.

You can read more about the change.org petition, which has also been submitted to the EU Petitions Committee, here.
