11 films that you need to see this February

Paul Moore

Cinema date?

The Oscar nominations may have already been announced but there’s still plenty of great films that are coming to your local cinema this February.

Here’s what’s in store.

Deadpool

Release date: February 10th

Plot: Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, Deadpool tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool.

Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, the antihero hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

Go see it because: We haven’t loved a trailer this much since we first saw Guardians of the Galaxy. The script sounds hilarious, Ryan Reynolds is one of the best actors for deadpan comedy and the action sequences look great.

Goosebumps

Release date: February 5th

Plot: A young kid teams up with the niece of young adult horror author R.L. Stine after the writer’s imaginary demons are set free on the town of Greendale, Maryland.

Watch it because: It’s the ultimate ’90s throwback – we all read those books as a child – and we’re getting a very strong Jumanji vibe from this one. Perfect if you’ve got to entertain your kids on a cold afternoon.

Trumbo

Release date: February 5th

Plot: The career of screenwriter Dalton Trumbo is halted by a witch hunt in the late 1940s when he defies the anti-communist HUAC committee and is blacklisted.

Go see it because: Bryan Cranston got an Oscar nomination for his performance.

Concussion

Release date: February 12th

Plot: A look at how American football players suffer from major head injuries and life-long debilitating problems as a result of repeated concussions and efforts by the National Football League to deny it.

Go see it because: It’s one of the most topical films of the year.

Zoolander 2

Release date: February 12th

Plot: Do we need one? Anyway, Derek and Hansel are modelling again when an opposing company attempts to take them out from the business.

Go see it because: There’s a lot more to life than being really, really, ridiculously good looking.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

Release date: February 12th

Plot: Seth Grahame-Smith’s parody novel gets the big screen treatment as Jane Austen’s classic is made a million times better by the addition of zombies, blood and violence.

Go see it because: Zombies, lots and lots of zombies that are f**ing up Jane Austen’s shit. Perfect for Valentine’s Day.

Point Break

Release date: February 12th

Plot: A young undercover FBI agent infiltrates a gang of thieves who share a common interest in extreme sports. A remake of the 1991 film, Point Break.

Go and see it because: As remakes go, will it fall into that rare category that includes Oceans 11/Dawn of the Dead or will it stink up the cinema like Total Recall/The Karate Kid.

We love the original and we’re hoping that this is handled with care.

Bone Tomahawk

Release date: February 19th

Plot: Four men set out in the Wild West to rescue a group of captives from cannibalistic cave dwellers.

Go see it because: Gore, humour and horses but Kurt Russell’s latest film has a very solid rating of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes and 71% on Metacritic. This has the makings of cult-classic.

Triple Nine

Release date: February 19th

Plot: A gang of criminals and corrupt cops plan the murder of a police officer in order to pull off their biggest heist yet across town.

Go see it because: The director of this one, John Hillcoat, has already made ‘The Proposition’ and ‘The Road’ so you know that this is going to be dark, gritty and incredibly realistic.

This being said, the cast looks incredibly strong with Aaron Paul, Kate Winslet, Anthony Mackie, Woody Harrelson, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Casey Affleck all starring.

Grimsby

Release date: February 26th

Plot: A new assignment forces a top spy to team up with his football hooligan brother.

Go see it because: The comedy-actioner has Borat himself, Sacha Baron Cohen,  alongside his wife Isla Fisher and her Hot rod co-star Ian McShane.

If that’s not enough then the always reliable Mark Strong plays Baron Cohen’s brother and Penélope Cruz is the villain.

Hail, Caesar!

Release date: February 26th

Plot: The story follows Baird Whitlock, a fixer working for Hollywood studios in the 1950s, trying to discover what happened to a cast member who vanishes during filming.

Go see it because: It’s the Coen Brothers. Enough said.
