BlacKkKlansman star John David Washington on a remarkable story that’s so incredible it’s true

Paul Moore

Irish audiences are about to get one of the year’s best films.

Every film needs a few beats to find its rhythm and in some cases, that never happens. This is something that you definitely can’t say about BlacKkKlansman because it only takes 15 seconds for Spike Lee’s film to grab your attention and it never lets go.

The Malcolm X and Inside Man director is back with BlacKkKlansman and his latest film is an absolute tour de force that’s brimming with laughs, anger, drama, racism, poignancy, history, but most importantly, it’s damn entertaining.

Quite frankly, there isn’t another filmmaker in the world who could adapt this story and do it the justice it deserves because the real life story of Ron Stallworth is far more interesting and unbelievable than anything a screenwriter could create.

It’s the early 1970s, and Ron Stallworth (John David Washington) is the first African-American detective to serve in the Colorado Springs Police Department. Determined to make a name for himself, Stallworth bravely sets out on a dangerous mission: infiltrate and expose the Ku Klux Klan. The young detective soon recruits a more seasoned colleague, Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver), into the undercover investigation of a lifetime. Together, they team up to take down the extremist hate group as the organisation aims to sanitise its violent rhetoric to appeal to the mainstream.

Along the way, the real Ron has a fair few telephone conversations with the Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, David Duke, and ultimately, he’s assigned to actually protect this man that defines the racist, hate-filled and horrific ideology of the KKK.

Ok, we know that this sounds very heavy but trust us, there are some brilliant comedic touches throughout.

After receiving a ten minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival, Spike Lee’s latest joint arrived into theatres with a buzz of excitement and as stated in our review on The Big Reviewski, we’re delighted to say that it’s fully deserved.

While one powerful final scene has rightfully got people talking, John David Washington was more than happy to chat about the film’s impact, how his character managed to stay so calm in this cauldron of hatred, and one scene-stealing line that fans of The Wire will know and love.

Aside from this, after his dad – a certain actor by the name of Denzel Washington – didn’t exactly rule out an appearance in the MCU when he chatted with JOE’s Eoghan Doherty, we wondered what John David would think about the idea of his dad starring in Black Panther 2.

Can ya dig it?

With an 82% rating on Metacritic and a five-star review from The Big Reviewski, BlacKkKlansman is definitely one of the best films of 2018.

That’s some fo real shit.
