Five Oscar nominated films, Batman, George Best and John Wick. What more could you want?
You can definitely tell that it’s award season and after the Oscar nominations were released, film fans are in for a treat over the coming weeks.
Here’s what’s in store:
Gold
Plot: An unlikely pair venture to the Indonesian jungle in search of gold.
Go see it because: We’re expecting Matthew McConaughey to be at his charming best in this story that epitomises the term ‘too crazy not to be true’

Loving
Plot: Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple, are sentenced to prison in Virginia in 1958 for getting married.
Go see it because: Ethiopian-Irish actress Ruth Negga is outstanding in this and it’s time for the world to see why she’s the pride of Limerick after receiving her Oscar nomination.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter
Plot: Picking up immediately after the events in Resident Evil: Retribution, humanity is on its last legs in Washington D.C. As the only survivor of what was meant to be humanity’s final stand .
Go see it because: You know exactly what to expect. Guns, bites, blood, run, jump, run, more bites, explosions. Repeat.

Rings
Plot: Samara returns with a familiar video tape to strike terror again in the third film of the Ring series, Rings.
Go see it because: Horror is a genre that’s constantly rebooted and remade. We’re hoping that this reimagining is more like Dawn of the Dead than The Omen.

Toni Erdmann
Plot: Retired piano teacher Winfried Conradi attempts to reconnect with his estranged adult daughter Ines, a driven businesswoman currently based in Romania. Ines, herself grappling with weighty emotional issues, is not pleased with her prankster father’s overtures and engages in a battle of wits with him
Go see it because: It’s Oscar nominated for the Best Foreign Language film and we’ve heard reports that it’s one of the most moving and funny films of the year.

Fences
Plot: An African-American father struggles with race relations in the United States while trying to raise his family in the 1950s and coming to terms with the events of his life.
Go see it because: Denzel Washington is playing a complex character that has moments of frustration and darkness. What else do you need?

Fifty Shades Darker
Plot: While Christian wrestles with his inner demons, Anastasia must confront the anger and envy of the women who came before her.
Go see it because: Well, you might be dragged to it, but the book did sell hundreds of millions of copies. People must really like bondage.

The Lego Batman Movie
Plot: A spin-off of The Lego Movie (2014) centering on the character of Batman.
Go see it because: EVERYTHING IS AWESOME! This film has managed to combine Batman, Lego and Will Arnett’s remarkable voice. Yes!

Prevenge
Plot: Widow Ruth is seven months pregnant when, believing herself to be guided by her unborn baby, she embarks on a homicidal rampage, dispatching anyone who stands in her way.
Go see it because: This has the makings of an instant cult-classic for horror fans.

A Cure for Wellness
Plot: An ambitious young executive is sent to retrieve his company’s CEO from an idyllic but mysterious “wellness center” at a remote location in the Swiss Alps but soon suspects that the spa’s miraculous treatments are not what they seem.
Go see it because: The trailer looked absolutely bonkers and we got a strong Shutter Island meets The Stepford Wives vibe from it.

The Founder
Plot: The story of McDonald’s founder, Ray Kroc.
Go see it because: Michael Keaton really isn’t in enough films.

The Great Wall
Plot: A mystery centered around the construction of the Great Wall of China.
Go see it because: Switch your brain off for a few hours and watch Matt Damon kick-ass.

Hidden Figures
Plot: A team of African-American women provide NASA with important mathematical data needed to launch the program’s first successful space missions.
Go see it because: The surprise Oscar nomination seems like it’s going to be a feelgood film that leaves you all warm and fuzzy inside. Not exactly a bad thing.
We’ve also heard that Pharrell has a few bangers on the soundtrack also.

John Wick: Chapter 2
Plot: The continuing adventures of former hitman, John Wick. We really hope that there’s a dog in this one also.
Go see it because: The original was one of the best action films of the last decade. We’re pumped.

Moonlight
Plot: A timeless story of human connection and self-discovery, Moonlight chronicles the life of a young black man from childhood to adulthood as he struggles to find his place in the world while growing up in a rough neighborhood of Miami.
Go see it because: If La La Land doesn’t win the Oscar for Best Picture, we’ve a strong feeling that it’s going to be this. See why.

George Best: All By Myself
Plot: One of the most naturally gifted soccer players the world has ever seen makes for an elusive and rather dispiriting subject in George Best: All By Myself, the latest documentary feature from Hillsborough director Daniel Gordon.
Go see it because: ” I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered.” The original football superstar.

Miss Sloane
Plot: A story of a brilliant and ruthless lobbyist who is notorious for her unparalleled talent and her desire to win at all costs, even when it puts her own career at risk.
Go see it because: Jessica Chastain rules the world. She really does.

Patriot’s Day
Plot: An account of Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis’s actions in the events leading up to the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing and the aftermath, which includes the city-wide manhunt to find the terrorists behind it.
Go see it because: This is clearly a project that Mark Wahlberg deeply cares about, and as we’ve seen in The Departed and The Fighter, when Wahlberg really focuses on his craft, he’s a force to be reckoned with.
