Well done to all involved with SLR and Boogaloo and Graham…
JOE will always champion new Irish films and while our attempts to get Into The West an Oscar nomination fell slightly short of the mark all those years ago, we’re delighted to announce that two Irish short films have been short-listed to receive Oscar nominations.
Yesterday, the people that rule Hollywood AKA the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, announced the ten live action short films nominated for the 87th Academy Awards and two of them have Irish connections..
The Belfast based Boogaloo and Graham, directed by Michael Lennox and written by Ronan Blaney, is nominated, as is Stephen Fingleton’s SLR.
To put this achievement into context, 141 films qualified in this category from countries all over the world. From these ten films the Academy will then select three to five nominees who will be in contention to win that shiny gold naked man trophy thingymebob named Oscar.
SLR stars emerging talent Ryan McParland, alongside JOE favourite and Game of Thrones star Liam Cunningham , and it tells the story of a man obsessed with voyeur pornography who makes a shocking discovery.
Boogaloo and Graham stars Charlene McKenna, Martin McCann and Jonathan Harden. The feature is set in Belfast during the 1970s as two young boys discover all the important facts of life with the help of their pet chickens. Jaysus, it’s just like JOE’s own autobiography.
