Star Wars head honcho finally talks about the future of the relationship between Poe and Finn

Rory Cashin

For a universe so forward thinking with their technology, the movies do seem to be very behind the times with their characters.

It took The Force Awakens before they finally put a female hero front and centre (which they doubled down on for Rogue One), and there was that weird backlash to their being a black person playing a storm-trooper.

Anyways, some fans were quick to jump on the instant chemistry between Poe (Oscar Isaac) and Finn (John Boyega), crossing all extremities that this might be the first LGBTQ characters / relationship within the franchise, despite that fact that Mark Hamill kinda outed Luke Skywalker as being gay already.

While the cast were more than happy to play up the potential of the situation, and correct us if we’re wrong, but this is the first time that anyone with any real influence has talked about it.

One lucky Spanish journalist from Ecartelera was sent to Orlando earlier this month for the Star Wars Celebration, and while there she was lucky enough to get into a conversation with Kathleen Kennedy, the president of LucasFilm.

They discussed a lot of topics regarding the Star Wars universe, but when the journalist asked about the potential relationship between Poe and Finn, Kennedy gave a vague but potentially hopeful response: “We’ve talked about it, but I think you’re not going to see it in The Last Jedi.”

Now, that might mean nothing, it might mean it is something we’ll never get to see, or it might be something that will be planted further in The Last Jedi, but we won’t get to see come into fruition until Episode IX.

Kennedy talked about how fans are as integral to the inventiveness and future plotting of the movies as the writers, producers and directors are:

“After 40 years of adventures people have a lot of information and a lot of theories about the way these stories can take, and sometimes those theories that come up are new ideas for us to listen to, read and pay attention to. [It’s] clear that the fans are as much masters of this franchise as we are.”

Well, the fans want Poe and Finn to end up happily ever after. Make it happen.
