VIDEO: Here’s what Dublin looked like for In Name of The Father’s opening sequence

Paul Moore

Seem familiar?

Oscar buzz has swept through Ireland after yesterday’s nominations so now seems like the perfect time to reflect on a film that received seven nominations back in ’94, Jim Sheridan’s powerful drama ‘In The Name of The Father’.

In a film that’s brimming with wonderful sequences and performances, one of the most memorable moments was at the very beginning.

The film did its very best to portray an incendiary riot in Belfast at the height of The Troubles, all of this soundtracked to Voodoo Child (Slight Return) by Jimi Hendrix.

As you may know, this scene wasn’t filmed actually Belfast but in Sherrif Street, Dublin instead.

Here’s what the set/area looked like on the day before filming started back in ’91.
