VIDEO: The Michael Collins/Star Wars mashup all Irish people have been waiting for

Conor Heneghan

It’s about time.

The hype around Star Wars has died down somewhat from the stratospheric levels it reached pre-Christmas, but it’s still very much doing the business in cinemas, still receiving rave reviews and still relevant well into the New Year.

Also relevant in this year of all years is the 1916 Rising and although Michael Collins really came to the fore in Irish political life after the event, he still had a significant role to play in the Rising, which will be discussed plenty in the coming months.

You can probably expect to see Neil Jordan’s controversial movie about him on the tellybox a couple of times between now and Easter too; don’t worry, Julia Roberts’ Irish accent sounds as bad now as it was when it was originally released.

Tenuous it may be, but one man with a link to both Star Wars and Michael Collins is Liam Neeson, who starred as Collins in Jordan’s movie and as Qui-Gon Jinn in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.

Both of Neeson’s characters (not really a Spoiler alert) suffered untimely fates in the movies and young Irish comedian David Reilly has made a mashup that will tickle the funny bones of anyone familiar with both.

Very funny, it is.
