Grammy-nominated rapper Nipsey Hussle, real name Ermias Ashgedom, has been killed in a shooting outside his clothing store in Los Angeles that took place on Sunday afternoon.

The rapper was shot multiple times in the parking lot at Marathon Clothing on West Slauson Avenue in south Los Angeles at about 3.25pm. He was pronounced dead in hospital shortly afterwards.

Two other men were shot, and a suspect remains at large. One of the other men is being treated in hospital, and the third man declined treatment, Los Angeles police Lt. Chris Martinez said.

The LAPD have released the following statement on the suspect who remains at large:

“The suspect in the shooting is described as a male black & LAPD South Bureau Homicide is conducting an investigation to locate him and anyone else involved. You can expect the area of Slauson & Crenshaw to be impacted by streets closures & heavy traffic for several hours,” the statement read.

Hussle’s debut studio album, Victory Lap, was nominated for Best Rap Album at this year’s Grammy Awards.

Despite having an affiliation with the Rollin’ 60s street gang when he was teenager, the rapper would later become a community organiser and play a key role in the Destination Crenshaw arts project – an open-air museum devoted to honouring African-American artistic achievement..

Los Angeles Police Commissioner Steve Soboroff said that he and Police Chief Michael Moore had been scheduled to meet with Hussle and representatives of Roc Nation, Jay-Z’s entertainment agency and production company, on Monday to “talk about ways he could help stop gang violence and help us help kids”.

Since the news was announced, various people have paid tribute to Nipsey Hussle’s legacy and his commitment to helping those in his community.
