72% of cases are in people under the age of 45.

Acting CMO Ronan Glynn said that he understands why people are concerned about the return to schools, and urged people to see the government’s official advice here.

He said:

“Internationally, where schools have been reopened, schools have not been a significant driver of community transmission.

“We all have a role to play in keeping this virus at low levels – this is key to protecting our education system over the coming weeks.”

Over the weekend, it emerged that last Friday (21 August), 13,000 Covid-19 tests were completed in Ireland, the highest daily number to date.
