48-hour travel suspension from UK to Ireland over coronavirus strain

This comes as the new strain has a “much higher” transmission rate.

The Irish Government is set to impose a 48-hour suspension on travel from Britain following fears over the spread of a new strain of coronavirus.

The move was all but confirmed by Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan on Sunday evening, though an official announcement is expected later on.

Ryan said that “airlines will not be flying” between Ireland and the UK, but that ferries will be permitted to carry haulage.

He also said that further changes will be made as it is a moving situation.

It is believed that exemptions will be made, including for essential workers.

Doctor Susan Hopkins of Public Health England told Sky News on Sunday that the new strain of coronavirus had been detected in a number of different parts in the UK.

“Every region has cases but with very small numbers.

“It has also been detected in Wales, in Scotland, we have not had any detected in Northern Ireland.”

Speaking about the strain, the Dutch health ministry said: “An infectious mutation of the Covid-19 virus is circulating in the United Kingdom.

“It is said to spread more easily and faster and is more difficult to detect.”
