A devastating attack.
The death toll continues to rise following a car bomb attack in the Somali capital of Mogadishu earlier today (28 December).
The attack is the most devastating of its kind to rock Somalia in years.
Footage from the scene shows multiple cars burned out at the scene of the explosion, which took place at a busy checkpoint in the east African nation.
Somali MP Abdirizak Mohamed has tweeted: “I was informed the death toll stands over 90 including 17 Somali police officers, 73 civilians and 4 foreign nationals. May Allah have mercy on the victims of this barbaric attack.”

It is believed that many of the dead are students.
So far no group has taken responsibility for the attack, but Somalia has long been plagued by terrorist group al-Shabaab, who have carried out similar attacks in the past.
Somalia is one of five countries categorised as “Very High Alert” by the Fragile States Index.
