Gardaí arrested a man in connection with a suspected case of female genital mutilation in Dublin on Thursday.
According to the Irish Times, the man is in his 30s and is believed to be of African descent. UNICEF estimate that the rate of female genital mutilation in certain African countries is as high as 98% for women of a certain age.
A UNICEF declared the rate of FGM to be 80–98 percent within the 15–49 age group in Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, Guinea, Mali, Sierra Leone, Somalia and Sudan.
The practice was outlawed in Ireland in 2012.
While the man was arrested in connection with the apparent crime, he was released without charge on Friday. Gardaí are continuing to investigate the situation.
