What do you think of this idea?
If you’re renting at the moment there’s a good chance you’ve had you rent increased by your landlord in the last year or so.
The thing is that there isn’t much you can do other than accept the increase and budget for €50 or €100 less every month or find a new house/apartment/room.
However, new proposals being considered by the Government (yeah, that shower) might make it a lot harder for property owners to hike up your rent.
According to the Irish Times, Minister for the Environment Alan Kelly and Minister for Finance Michael Noonan are in talks about regulating rent increases in the private market.
These are the ideas they’re thinking about implementing:
- Landlords will need evidence of rents in three similar properites to theirs to justify an increase in rent.
- The introduction of longer notice period for rent increases, it’s currently 28 days, they want to change it to three months.
- Tenants can provide evidence of rents in similar properties to argue against an increase.
Fingers crossed those proposals get over the line.
